Customer Reviews

 "Good camera." 2010-08-19
By duckrabbit
This camera has met or exceeded all expectations. It's very easy to use and so far has been problem free. The captured images are top notch. A professional photographer or someone who is extremely particular about one small feature or another might be able to find a problem, but the average person should be very happy with this camera.

"This is the One!! Canon SX200IS" 2010-07-16
By Robert H. McBride (Hereford, AZ USA)
I read reviews and comparisons for several months before purchasing the SX200IS. Save yourself the trouble and get this one before it goes away. I like it way better than the 210 which is already marketed as its replacement. (Mine is red, and it's a nice dark maroon.) Until Canon replaces the SX20IS and includes a larger sensor (as in the Sony NEX3/5), there is no reason to go with a larger body camera with the small sensor used in most point and shoots. I almost bought the SX20IS, but realized I should wait for the larger sensor. Until then, I am even happier with this camera that I expected to be. The 12x optical zoom, including wide angle in this small a body is an excellent compromise.

For some BACKGROUND PERSPECTIVE: Consider that I have been taking pictures for over 50 years, including the last 40 with two Canon FT-QL SLRS with all the appropriate lenses, and a Sony DSC-85 for the last 10. The Canon SX200IS allows me to do anything (and more) I could do with the SLRs and four lenses from 28mm to 400mm (560mm on the SX200IS), all in one package that fits in my pocket! The ten years from the Sony 3.3 MP to the 12 MP Canon also gave me a great leap in image quality. Leaving the image quaility on the highest setting gives photos of about 3.5 MB each. That's plenty of data for editing, cropping, printing or projects (like photo books), and everyone that looks at my photos is amazed at the color and quality of the images. I have had the SX200 for about two months (an early Fathers Day gift to myself) and have taken about 400 photos (not counting any I have deleted), mostly on Auto, including a wedding reception and a military funeral. I already made four photo books, and they all turned out very well.

READ THE User's Manual, and then read it again!! I'm still learning more cool stuff this camera will do. BTW, my camera included a small format copy of the manual (Canon reads these reviews, I guess), but I had already downloaded it from the Canon website and had it printed and bound in large format, so the small copy stays in my bag with the camera. That's the other thing, this camera goes everywhere I go, since it's small enough to fit in one of the pockets of my shoulder bag that I take to work and in the car on weekends.

I like the ability to control exposure and focus myself, and I am still learning all the various options. If you just want to turn it on and take great pictures, don't worry about it. Just do it, and you'll be happy. The videos are great too, BTW!

The pop up flash is NOT an issue. Your left hand first finger gets used to the notch behind it, so you forget it very quickly.

Quality, Solid construction! Nice finish.

"Great for the Price and Capabilities" 2010-07-04
By S. Li (USA)
1. Big LCD (3 inches)

2. Very sturdy construction (run over by a car and the only damage is some scratches on the metal backplate. I don't recommend this... I only found this out by accident, heh)

3. 12x optical zoom that goes up to 48x with digital zoom (still really good photos if you can hold the camera really still. Image stabilization helps with this)

4. Good picture quality (not GREAT pictures but good ones. Not the crispest pictures around, which is apparent once you select the "actual size" option on your PC. You also see some softening at the edges)

5. Manual mode (shutter speed ranges: 15"-1/3200; aperture ranges: f3.4-f8.0. Shutter speed can be set to 1/3200 BUT you'll almost never end up using this option as the aperture only opens as wide as f3.4 so you'll almost always get extremely underexposed photos. The light meter assists in helping you select the aperture and shutter speed but in my opinion, it's best to let the Auto and scene modes handle the aperture and shutter speed.)

6. Lots of neat little features that aren't unique to this camera but are nice to have (facial recognition, lots of scene presets, picture stats, etc)

7. HD 720p video capture capability (excellent quality. 1280x720 resolution)

8. Looks good and a bit chunky but that's fine... I like my 12x optical zoom

9. $264 at time of purchase (pretty good price for a camera with so many features)

Not the most comprehensive review out there but I hope this helps :)

By Jim Verstale (Parsippany, NJ)
I own this cam for about 2 months, so far, and I love it. It is real japan made, strong and nice. The image quality exceeds my expectations from a little cam and the awesome lens lets me shoot from tele to wide and macro. I am very happy with it. Oh yeh the vide is superb too!
